The President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, faced an incident of sexual harassment while walking through the streets of Mexico City during an official tour.

As she greeted residents, a man managed to approach her closely due to a lapse in security and attempted to kiss and touch her body without her consent.

A video circulating on social media shows the man approaching the President from behind, placing his right arm around her, touching her inappropriately, and bringing his face close to hers.

After the incident, her team quickly intervened and removed the man, while Sheinbaum walked away visibly disturbed by what had occurred.

Notably, no visible security personnel were present at the exact moment of the incident, and the authorities have not yet issued any official statement about the case.

The man’s identity remains unknown, and there is still no confirmation about whether he was arrested. In the video, the individual appears to be in an unstable state, possibly under the influence of alcohol or another substance.

It’s worth mentioning that during the presidency of Andrés Manuel López Obrador, the Presidential General Staff — a military body responsible for protecting and coordinating the President’s security — was disbanded, which may have impacted current protection measures.

Sexual Harassment in Mexico

Sexual harassment remains a widespread issue in Mexico, particularly affecting women. Although official statistics are limited, data from the 2021 National Survey on the Dynamics of Household Relationships (ENDIREH) reveals that 70.1% of women aged 15 and older have faced some form of violence during their lifetime, while 45.6% have been assaulted in public spaces.

On average, around 90 cases of sexual abuse are reported daily across the country, but experts believe that the real number is significantly higher due to underreporting and social stigma.
