North Korea launched over ten short-range ballistic missiles into the Sea of Japan on Thursday, according to the South Korean Army. This development comes amidst escalating tensions between the two Koreas, following a September incident in which three South Korean soldiers were injured by the detonation of two landmines along the border.

South Korean Joint Staff officials reported detecting a missile launch from the eastern area of Wonsan in North Korea at approximately 12:30 local time, equivalent to 3:30 GMT. The missiles were reportedly directed toward the Sea of Japan, also known as the East Sea in the two Koreas.

The Japanese Ministry of Defense conducted a missile test, although the exact number of missiles launched was not disclosed.

North Korea has conducted a missile launch, marking its first such test since a previous exercise in which the country demonstrated the capabilities of two types of cruise missiles launched from submarines on October 14.

A key military test is being conducted amidst heightened tensions between North and South Korea, following a recent mine explosion that occurred on September 21.

South Korea has formally accused North Korea of placing explosives on the southern side of the Military Demarcation Line, the unofficial border separating the two nations, and has submitted a written complaint to the United Nations Security Council.

North Korea has rejected claims of its involvement in the incident, and in turn, accused South Korea of misrepresenting the circumstances of the explosion in the United Nations Security Council, allegedly to obstruct its border fortification efforts.

Following a recent directive from North Korean leader Kim Jong-un to rapidly transform his armed forces into an elite unit, the country has taken a significant step forward. This move comes on the heels of a warning from Kim Jong-un's influential sister, Kim Yo-jong, who threatened to deploy additional military assets and reactivate propaganda equipment along the border.
