Paul Skenes is not having a good season in the Grand Leagues. Skenes’ numbers have declined after the previous campaign. The Pittsburgh Pirates launcher believes this poor performance is due to their participation in the World Baseball Classic.
Paul Skenes was the Newcomer of the Year in the 2024 season.In the next campaign Skenes won Cy Young National League Award.
“There are a lot of factors, so I don’t want to put all the responsibility on that (...) But I feel that was, a bit, the root of the whole matter,” Skenes said in relation to his participation in the World Classical with the United States.

Paul Skenes went from 1.97 to 3.91. In 31 appearances in the season, Skenesins a record of 10 victories and 11 losses. The Pirates has allowed 81 clean races (36 more than last season), and 73 clean races (32 more).
In this sense, the 24-year-old launcher considers that the lack of preparation for the season affected him. While in the World Baseball Classic, Skenes considers that he lost time to get to tone for the team. In addition, he increased his share of appearances and reduced his rest time.
“Regularly, at that time of year, you’re preparing (for the season) and the process is usually a bit slow. You can, in a way, get into the slope and find your rhythm. In one practice you can be rubbing at 97 mph and the next you are shooting at 98 or 99 mph. And that wasn’t my case this year,” he added.

In the World Classical Baseball, Paul Skenes had two openings. In 8.1 innings released, Skenes only allowed a clean race. The United States launcher accumulated 9 ponches and only awarded one ticket in their participations in the games against the Dominican Republic (first phase and in the eliminatory phase).
“It definitely affected the year.Unfortunately, I don’t think I’m the only one,” concluded the Pittsburgh Pirates right-hander.
