Former Prosecutor Jack Smith Claims He Has Evidence Against Trump for Conspiring to Overturn 2020 Elections
Smith was subpoenaed by the committee to provide testimony and documents as part of an investigation he conducted into Trump during the Biden administration
Former Special Prosecutor Jack Smith met with lawmakers and stated that his team of investigators has evidence that President Donald Trump conspired to overturn the results of the 2020 election, according to excerpts of his testimony obtained by The Associated Press.
Jack Smith was subpoenaed by the committee to provide testimony and documents as part of an investigation into his research on Trump during the administration of Democratic President Joe Biden.
Lawmakers from both parties were able to question him about the findings of those investigations in a closed-door meeting.
“Powerful Evidence”
The Associated Press reported that Smith told lawmakers that investigators had amassed “powerful evidence” that Trump violated the law by stockpiling classified documents at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach, Florida, and by obstructing government efforts to retrieve the records.
“I made my decisions in the investigation without regard to President Trump’s political affiliation, activities, beliefs, or candidacy for the 2024 election,” Smith said. “We acted based on what the facts and the law demanded, the same lesson I learned early in my career as a prosecutor.”
Filed criminal charges
Jack Smith was chosen by the Justice Department in 2022 to investigate Donald Trump’s attempts to overturn his 2020 defeat to Joe Biden and Trump’s stockpiling of classified documents at Mar-a-Lago.
Smith’s team filed criminal charges in both investigations but dropped the cases after Donald Trump’s election in November 2024, as a sitting president cannot be indicted.
The meeting comes as Republicans in Congress,They seek to discredit the investigations into Trump by publishing emails and other documents from the investigations.
