Jeanine Pirro faces criticism from Trump and Republicans for dropping the reflecting pool case
The prosecutor's decision unleashed criticism within the Republican Party itself and opened a new front for Trump
Donald Trump broke with one of his closest allies and led a wave of criticism against Jeanine Pirro, federal prosecutor for the District of Columbia, after her office dropped charges of alleged vandalism related to the reflecting pool on the National Mall in Washington.
The president assured in Truth Social that he is “100% in disagreement” with Pirro's determination, considering that the case should continue.
"I totally disagree with Jeanine Pirro. What was she thinking?" Trump wrote.
Prosecutors dropped charges against Olympic sprinter David Hearn after concluding that new evidence suggested the damage was the result of poor installation by a contractor and not a deliberate act of vandalism.
In the court filing, Pirro's office explained that the Interior Department provided additional information after the indictment was filed, which changed the outlook of the case.
Republicans also question Pirro
The criticism did not rest solely on Trump. Republican figures and conservative commentators questioned the prosecutor's actions, while political analysts took advantage of the turn in the case to point out flaws in the initial investigation.
Republican strategist Maura Gillespie, during an interview on MSNBC, stated that Pirro tried to distance himself from responsibility for the handling of the file.
“I don't see that she feels like she has to face any real consequences,” he declared.
The case had been used by Trump as an example of the need to toughen sanctions against those who damage federal property. Therefore, the withdrawal of the charges represents a setback for that discourse and highlights unusual differences between the president and one of his closest collaborators.
