Mexico reveals contact with Keiko Fujimori to advance in the normalization of relations with Peru
The Mexican president affirmed that her Administration is in dialogue with the new Peruvian government and insisted on not wanting "the rupture of relations."
The president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, revealed this Wednesday that the Mexican Foreign Minister, Roberto Velasco, spoke “personally” with the president of Peru, Keiko Fujimori, whose mandate began yesterday, while highlighting that “we are moving forward” to normalize relations with the new government of the Andean country.
“The Secretary of Foreign Affairs spoke personally with the president of Peru and we are moving forward,” the president declared in her daily press conference.
The right-wing Keiko Fujimori began her mandate as president of Peru for the next five years (2026-2031) this Tuesday, with a first speech at a ceremony held in the Peruvian Congress.
Numerous heads of state from Latin America attended the investiture, although Sheinbaum's absence was one of the most notable.
Without commenting on this issue, the Mexican president stated that her Administration is in dialogue with the new Peruvian Executive, while insisting that "we do not want the rupture of relations."
Peru broke diplomatic relations with Mexico at all levels in November 2025, following the decision of the Mexican Government to grant political asylum to former Peruvian Prime Minister Betssy Chávez, prosecuted for her participation in the attempted coup d'état attributed to former president Pedro Castillo (2021-2022).
Regarding the origin of the crisis, Sheinbaum stressed that his Government continues to want Chávez to receive safe passage "to come to Mexico."
"We are going to see how this develops. And the president of Peru also knows that we have a position related to President Castillo. It is a position that we have established, but beyond that, we obviously do not want the rupture of relations," he added.
The head of state expressed her confidence in being able to give “more news soon” about the bilateral talks.
Since the breakdown of relations, both countries have kept their diplomatic ties suspended, although they continue to share regional integration spaces such as the Pacific Alliance. EFE
