Americans' perception of President Donald Trump's immigration policy is beginning to change. A new poll from the AP-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research reveals that more and more citizens believe that the president has been too harsh in his actions against immigrants, especially on issues such as deportations, ICE operations and restrictions on legal immigration.

Rejection of Trump's immigration policy grows

According to the study, only 39% of American adults approve of Trump's management on immigration, a figure lower than the 49% registered at the beginning of his second term. Although he maintains solid support among Republicans, overall support has declined as his immigration policies advance.

The results show that nearly half of those surveyed believe that the president has gone too far in deporting irregular immigrants and restricting legal immigration. Furthermore, rejection increases when it comes to sending federal immigration agents to cities across the country or using traffic checkpoints to locate and detain undocumented people.

“55% of adults think that Trump has gone too far by sending federal immigration agents to American cities,” says the AP-NORC Center poll.

Republican support remains strong

Despite the drop in overall approval, the study shows that eight out of ten Republicans continue to support the president's immigration strategy. Immigration even continues to be one of the issues where Trump obtains the best levels of acceptance within his political base, above issues such as the economy or foreign policy.

However, the survey also reflects that independents show less solid support and that Democrats maintain a majority rejection of the actions promoted by the federal government on immigration matters and the performance of ICE.

The economy continues to worry citizens

Although immigration continues to be a central theme in Trump's political speech, Americans' main concerns remain economic. The increase in the cost of food, gasoline, electricity and housing has forced millions of families to modify their consumption habits to face the increase in prices.

The national survey was conducted between July 23 and 27, 2026, among 1,165 adults using NORC's AmeriSpeak panel, with a margin of error of ±3.7 percentage points.
