Republican Senator Lisa Murkowski opposes the bill requiring proof of citizenship to vote
Republican Lisa Murkowski refuses to support the SAVE Act, which would require people to provide proof of citizenship to vote
Lisa Murkowski became the first Republican senator to oppose the SAVE Act, a bill promoted by President Donald Trump that would require some people to provide documents beyond their driver's license to verify their citizenship and thus their right to vote nationwide.
House Republicans support legislation to impose stricter proof of citizenship requirements before the midterm elections.
The bill, called the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act, would require Americans to prove their citizenship when registering to vote.
This would be done by presenting a valid passport or birth certificate, along with a current government-issued photo ID.
The conservatives argue that this would prevent any possibility of voter fraud.
However, Democrats anticipate that such requirements would disenfranchise millions of citizens.
Currently, federal law requires voters in national elections to be citizens, but there is no requirement to provide proof, and lying carries criminal penalties.
Republican Representative Lisa Murkowski has expressed her opposition to the bill promoted by the White House.
“When Democrats tried to push through sweeping election reform in 2021, Republicans unanimously opposed it because it would have federalized elections, something we have long opposed. Now I see proposals like the SAVE Act and the MEGA Act that would effectively accomplish just that. Again, I do not support these efforts.
The US Constitution not only clearly grants states the authority to regulate the 'times, places, and manner' of holding federal elections, but uniform mandates from Washington, DC, “They rarely work in places like Alaska,” he noted. The legislation introduced by Mike Lee, senator from Utah, has 48 Republican co-sponsors and the full support of Donald Trump to pass it in Congress in the coming days, which looks complicated, as Democrats are closing ranks to try to defeat it.
