The president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, congratulated the people and government of the United States on the occasion of the 250th anniversary of its Independence and took advantage of the event to emphasize that the bilateral relationship must be maintained under the principles of respect for the sovereignty and self-determination of nations.

During the delivery of cards from the Pensión Mujeres Bienestar program in Quiroga, Michoacán, the president recalled the historical significance of July 4 for the neighboring country and expressed official congratulations.

"Today we celebrate 250 years of the Independence of the United States and we send congratulations to its people and its government; and we also remember that all nations have the right to be free and independent," he expressed.

From that message, Sheinbaum maintained that Mexico's foreign policy will continue to be guided by principles of equality among nations, pointing out that no country should intervene in the internal decisions of another. He added that sovereignty implies that each people has the freedom to choose their rulers and define their own destiny.

He remembers historical episodes to support his position

The president reinforced this approach with references to different moments in the history shared between Mexico and the United States.

One of them was the testimony of former US President Ulysses S. Grant, who participated in the War of 1847 and later described that conflict as an unjust war. Sheinbaum also recalled the phrase attributed to the American soldier in which he recognized the value of the Mexican Army during the invasion.

He also highlighted the work of Margarita Maza during the French intervention, pointing out that she took steps in Washington to maintain the recognition of the American government to the Republic headed by Benito Juárez and avoid support for the empire of Maximilian of Habsburg.

At another point in his speech he recalled Venustiano Carranza's position during the Mexican Revolution, when he rejected foreign military intervention to resolve the country's internal affairs.

To close this historical review, he returned to one of Benito Juárez's best-known phrases: “Among individuals, as between nations, respect for the rights of others is peace.”

The bilateral relationship maintains priority issues on the agenda

The president's message occurred while Mexico and the United States keep various issues open on their bilateral agenda, including the review of the Treaty between Mexico, the United States and Canada (T-MEC), as well as issues related to security, migration, trade and the fight against drug trafficking.

Although the congratulations were aimed at commemorating the 250th anniversary of American Independence, Sheinbaum took advantage of the date to reiterate that the relationship between both countries must be maintained under the principles of cooperation, mutual respect and full recognition of national sovereignty.
