The possibility of Ukraine producing Patriot anti-missile system interceptors on its own territory took a new step this Tuesday, after the presidents of the United States, Donald Trump, and Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, held a private meeting at the White House in which they discussed US authorization to manufacture these defense systems, considered essential to protect Ukrainian cities from attacks with Russian ballistic missiles.

The private meeting held in the Oval Office lasted just over an hour. Later, Zelensky described the conversation as “good” and thanked the American president for the support provided to his country.

"President Trump and I talked about licenses for the production of Patriot interceptors and other ideas that could be helpful. We also talked about diplomacy; it is important to revitalize the diplomatic process. Our teams will coordinate the details of future communications," the Ukrainian president wrote on his X account.

Zelensky added that “I thank the United States for its strong support” and also expressed his condolences for the death of Republican Senator Lindsey Graham, whom he described as “a true friend of Ukraine.”

For her part, White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt reported in X that the meeting was “positive and productive,” without offering further details about the agreements reached.

The conversation occurs just a few weeks after Trump announced, during the NATO summit in Ankara, his intention to grant kyiv a license to manufacture Patriot interceptors, a measure that would represent a major change in military cooperation between the two countries. On that occasion, the US president declared: "We are going to give them a license to manufacture Patriots. It is a defensive weapon, and I like that more than an offensive weapon."

The Patriot system, developed by the American industry, is one of the few Western platforms capable of intercepting ballistic missiles, a type of weapon that Russia has used most frequently in its bombings against Ukrainian cities. The shortage of interceptors has led kyiv to insist for months on obtaining new batteries, ammunition and now also the possibility of producing them locally to reduce its dependence on foreign supplies.

Beyond military cooperation, it emerged that Trump and Zelensky addressed the need to reactivate diplomatic efforts to end the war, an objective that the American president has maintained as one of the priorities of his foreign policy, although so far negotiations between kyiv and Moscow remain stalled and without concrete results.

The Ukrainian president's visit coincided with the funeral of Senator Lindsey Graham, one of the main promoters of US support for Ukraine in Congress.

Before leaving Washington, Zelensky also planned to meet with a group of legislators promoting an initiative to toughen sanctions against Russia, a project promoted by Graham himself before his death.
