Trump decreed two new federal holidays in December: what you should know
President Trump decreed two days in December as federal holidays in 2025. Find out who will have the day off, when they are scheduled, and if they are permanent
Kudos to a recent decision by the president, Americans will be able to get a little extra sleep during the holidays this December. Donald Trump signed an executive order on December 18 that designated December 24 ( Christmas Eve ) and December 26 ( Christmas Day ) as federal holidays for 2025. This implies that some people may have a little more time to rest during those times, which will make the Christmas holidays last longer. Although this initiative is a welcome for some, not all employees will reap the rewards of these days away. The reason is that the policy is no permanent even though Trump designated these days as getaways for 2025. As happened with June 19th in 2021 ( June 19 ), a day must be approved by Congress and signed into law by the president for it to permanently become a holiday on the federal calendar. What does this actually mean for employees? Although December 24 and 26 did be national holidays in 2025, never all workers will have the opportunity to take these days away. Federal agencies may be shut down as a result of Trump's order, which only affects government entities. Private firms are not legally required to offer these weeks off, though. Only those who work for the government or federal agencies will be able to get the day off, while others may not experience significant change. What about businesses and bankers? Most lenders, stores, and personal services will remain locked as usual on December 25 for Christmas Day. But, December 24 and 26 will still be productive days for some businesses. Banks may be available on both times, aside from Christmas Day, according to the US Federal Reserve. Additionally, big retailers will stick to their traditional periods, including Costco, Target, and Walmart. simply closing on December 25.
Post offices for the United States Postal Service ( USPS) will be shut down on December 25, but they will be opened on December 24 and 26, to provide exchange services to the public.
Is this a continuous change?
Important to note that this Trump order does not mean that these days will be forever added to the holiday calendar. In fact, during the holiday season, this kind of political order is quite popular. For instance, President Barack Obama made December 26 a trip in 2014 because it fell on a Friday. Additionally, during his first terms in 2019 and 2020, Trump had now declared December 24th a vacation.
This kind of action does not alter the long-term timeline, and it does not, therefore, guarantee that December 24 and 26 may be breaks in the future.
If you have ideas for those times, it is crucial to make sure your place of work is open or closed in advance. Keep in mind that businesses and companies may not always be closed if you need to work activities or do some browsing. Federal organizations will be the only people who won't be working on those times, too. Make sure to plan your actions in progress to avoid any lapses.
