In the midst of Gilberto Mora’s successful rise to the Mexican national team there are other talented players who have not had the same luck. Alexis Vega, a “different” footballer from Toluca, could end his story with El Tri. How has it been for the Mexican team?
Alexis Vega did not agree with Javier Aguirre for his participation in the 2026 World Cup. The “Gru” is one of the most determining Mexican footballers in the entire MX League, but his minutes have been scarce in the national team.
“From the World Cup... I went badly because I didn’t have much participation. It’s a fight with myself, not with the technician or anyone. I wanted to play more but so is this (...) Ahorita I am enjoying very much being in Toluca and I have an ongoing conversation with my wife, very meditated, in which I am seeing whether to continue in the selection or not. I know it’s a complicated decision, but these days I’ll be making a statement to see if I’m still in the team,” Vega told TUDN.

After seeing 11 minutes against South Africa, the Toluca player didn’t see a minute in the rest of the 2026 World Cup matches. This was a tough blow for a footballer who has been one of the great protagonists of the MX League in recent seasons.
In 2019, during the process of Gerardo Martino, Alexis Vega played his first match with the Mexican national team t-shirt. The “Gru” debut was in a friendly match against Paraguay. Mexico won 2–4 and Alexis Vega provided an assist.
Since then, Alexis Vega has played 54 games with the Mexican national team.The Toluca footballer has contributed 7 goals and 8 assists for the Mexican cause.
Three of Alexis Vega's goals were in friendly duels (Colombia, Iraq and Sweden), the other four were in official competitions such as World Cup and Gold Cup (Saudi Arabia, Jamaica and Cuba).
