F-16 fighters from the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) intercepted this Sunday two aircraft that entered the restricted airspace of Bedminster, New Jersey, where President Donald Trump's golf club is located. The aircraft were safely escorted out of the area by the fighter jets, NORAD said in a statement. The operation was carried out while temporary flight restrictions established by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) remained in force due to the presence of the president and the LIV Golf New York tournament being held over the weekend in nearby facilities.

Trump National Golf Club Bedminster is located about 40 miles (64 kilometers) west of New York and is one of the places Trump often visits during summer weekends.

NORAD asks pilots to review restrictions before flying

Temporary flight restrictions are part of the measures used to reinforce security around presidential trips and events of great importance. Before the weekend, NORAD had warned that it would increase surveillance in the area and could use fighter jets and ground systems to respond to possible incursions.

After the interception, the agency reminded the pilots of the obligation to consult the Notices to Airmen (NOTAM), which details the restrictions and temporary modifications to the airspace. “Check aeronautical advisories before each flight,” NORAD reiterated in its message to aviators.

When a civil aircraft is intercepted by military aircraft, there are specific protocols to establish communication, identify the device and guide it out of the restricted sector. Among the international emergency frequencies contemplated are 121.5 and 243.0.

The episode occurs a few days after another incident related to air security during a presidential trip. The Marine One helicopter, carrying Trump, flew less than a mile from a commercial airliner near Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport.

The FAA then confirmed a temporary reduction in separation between the two aircraft and began a review of the circumstances.

The Washington area had already come under special scrutiny after the Jan. 29, 2025, accident, when an Army Black Hawk helicopter collided with an American Airlines passenger plane. All 67 people traveling on both aircraft died. In the case of Bedminster, NORAD did not initially specify whether the two aircraft deliberately entered the restricted space or if it was an accidental incursion. No additional consequences were reported after the F-16 intervention.
