Former health official Anthony Fauci returned to the center of the political debate by availing himself of the Fifth Amendment during a Senate hearing, where Republican legislators sought to question him about his actions during the COVID-19 pandemic and investigations related to the origin of the coronavirus.

The appearance was called by Republican Senator Rand Paul, chairman of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, who has maintained for years that Fauci incurred irregularities when referring to the financing of coronavirus research in China. The former director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) has repeatedly rejected those accusations. Fauci decided not to answer questions following the recommendation of his legal defense.

Fauci accuses political persecution

In his initial message, Fauci assured that Senator Rand Paul maintains an “obsession” with prosecuting him and stated that the hearing sought to provoke a statement that could be used against him.

“Although it pains me to do so, on the advice of my attorneys I will invoke my right under the Fifth Amendment,” the doctor said during the session.

Reuters revealed that Rand Paul reiterated his allegations about alleged contradictions surrounding “gain-of-function” research and previously released more than a thousand pages from Fauci's personal diary, documents that, according to the senator, show differences between his private notes and his public statements.

Differences persist over the origin of the virus

The hearing reignited the debate about the origin of COVID-19. While some Republican legislators continue to promote the hypothesis of a laboratory leak, various US intelligence agencies maintain divided positions and the scientific community continues to believe that there is no definitive consensus on how the pandemic began.

More than 150 scientists also signed a public letter in support of Fauci, maintaining that there is no credible evidence to support the accusations against him and calling the investigations a political persecution.
