Greg Abbott says an immigrant attacked ICE agents with his vehicle

Civil organizations in Texas accused the governor of promoting a narrative that criminalizes immigrants

Greg Abbott says an immigrant attacked ICE agents with his vehicle
Time to Read 3 Min

After an incident in a Walmart parking lot in San Antonio, Texas Governor Greg Abbott claimed an immigrant drove his car at a group of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement ( ICE ) agents and injured one officer.

ICE claims that the incident took place on Tuesday when national agencies interrogated a car during an operation. Officers blocking the car return are captured on a movie later released by the company with police cars positioned in front and back. The film shows agents directing the vehicle to leave while pointing firearms and circling the vehicle, banging on the windows, and directing the driver to leave. Abbott responded to the video by posting an X message on his account, where he claimed the driver was an "illegal mysterious legal" and that he had insulted one of the agents by ramming ICE cars. The government demanded the imprisonment of those who, he claimed, impede the enforcement of immigration rules and put a risk on police and citizens. The minute the car hits the agents is not obviously captured in the publicly available footage, though. The vehicle exits the car toward the end of the video, throws himself to the ground, and is arrested without receiving any strong blows from the officers.

Conflicting Accounts and No Police Review

No official information about the agent's issue has been made, despite ICE reporting that one of the brokers was injured and taken to a doctor. There is no common police report to date, according to the San Antonio Police Department, and it did not receive any emergency calls related to this event.

Federal authorities identified the alleged victim as ICE Field Office Director Miguel Vergara, who is alleged to have suffered neck injury. The company's director, Todd Lyons, defended his subordinates ' actions, saying," These are continuous attacks like this, this has to stop," adding that the FBI and Homeland Security are currently conducting an investigation into the incident as obstruction of justice.

The event occurs as immigration procedures become more and more incongruent. The death of a woman in Minneapolis after being shot by an ICE adviser during an operation reignited in criticism of the use of force by national authorities in the last week.

The governor was accused of promoting a tale that criminalizes immigrants by civic organizations in Texas. This kind of rhetoric, according to Gabriel Rosales of the Texas League of United Latin American Citizens ( LULAC ), only "deepens fear in communities" and doesn't address the root causes of migration.

The administration of President Donald Trump maintains that officials are increasingly confronted with challenges and violent acts, which it attributes to opposition to its anti-immigrant laws, and raids and operations continue in various cities across the nation.
