Hillary Clinton defined Joe Biden's attempt to re-elect himself as a terrible mistake for the country
Hillary Clinton joined the criticism leveled at Joe Biden for clinging to seeking re-election instead of allowing someone else to launch a candidacy on time
Hillary Clinton, former first lady of the nation, joined the voices of other relevant figures of the Democratic Party who consider the position taken by Joe Biden to be unfortunate in trying to re-elect himself instead of having given the alternative, in a timely manner, to another candidate better positioned in front of the electorate.
After several weeks of increasing pressure exerted by Democratic leaders concerned about his state of health exhibited in his debate against Donald Trump, on July 21, 2024, Biden ended his campaign and days later, when a consensus was expected to define a candidate to replace him, the former president anticipated by naming Kamala Harris, a decision that ultimately meant one of the worst defeats at the polls.
During an interview with The New Yorker magazine, Hillary Clinton reproached Biden for allowing himself to be seduced by the idea of governing for another four years, since the message sent to citizens was counterproductive to the interests of his party.
"He made a terrible mistake. He made a terrible mistake for himself, for his legacy and for the country. He had said he wouldn't run again, and you know, counterfactual narratives are always a little complicated, but I think if he had stuck to that plan and said, say, in the late summer of 2023 that he wasn't going to run, that he was going to pass the baton to the next generation, we would have had a real contest.
Unfortunately, I believe that whoever would have emerged victorious from that race, whether it was the vice president, a governor, a senator or anyone else, would have defeated Donald Trump. Therefore, I think it was a terrible miscalculation on the part of President Biden,” he said.
The former Secretary of State remained silent for almost two years, perhaps waiting for Biden himself to publicly acknowledge his mistake, but that did not happen either.
"My polls indicated that we were always on the verge of beating this guy. I was sure he would beat Trump, who is a loser. I never fully believed the claims that, somehow, there was an overwhelming reluctance for me to run again. I didn't feel that. I'm at peace with my decision," Biden declared at the time while appearing on the television show "The View."
