Doug Ford, Premier of Ontario, defined as shameful the warning issued by President Donald Trump to consider issuing additional tariffs on Canadian exports, this as a sanction for the inadequate management of its forests to avoid forest fires that end up affecting American cities.

Through a message shared on the Truh Social platform, the 80-year-old Republican ranted against his northern neighbor, claiming that it has neglected its forests and blamed it for the dozens of fires that have occurred near the border shared between both countries.

“We hold Canada responsible for the fact that it is not adequately maintaining its forests and bushlands, and the United States is being unnecessarily invaded by dirty, polluted and unhealthy air, the quality of which is dangerous and totally unacceptable.

“This is willful negligence, and it is becoming something that happens every year, costing the United States billions of dollars, the cost of this pollution must necessarily be added to the tariffs that Canada is currently paying,” he wrote.

During a press conference, Doug Ford reproached the New York tycoon for his lack of empathy with Canadians who, he said, showed solidarity last year when California suffered one of the most severe attacks of nature in recent years when, for several days, the fire consumed thousands of houses.

"I find it shameful that the US administration and congressmen write these letters and blame us. They have very short memories. We had the tanker planes, everything ready, ready to go to California. It was last year.

That's what neighbors do, right? You don't start threatening or criticizing, because, you know what? One day it will be your turn. And we will be there without hesitation to support our neighbors,” he emphasized.

Aside from the damage caused by the fires, Trump intends to take advantage of them to reactivate his initiative to annex Canadian territory to the United States and thus access its natural resources following a route similar to that drawn in Venezuela, only without military intervention involved.
