A pilot survived Monday morning after the small plane he was piloting crashed into the roof of a home in the city of Fulshear, Texas, in an accident that prompted widespread mobilization of emergency crews.

According to local authorities, the accident occurred around 6:00 a.m., when the aircraft, a Piper J3C-65, was apparently trying to land on the Covey Trails Airstrip runway, but ended up hitting a residence.

The homeowner told ABC 13 that he was sleeping when he heard a loud bang at the time of impact.

Images released after the accident show the yellow plane resting on the structure of the house, with one of its wheels on the roof and a wing detached on the ground, a few meters from the property's pool.

Emergency crews rescued the pilot

Firefighters from Fulshear Simonton Fire Department, Community Volunteer Fire Department, Fort Bend HAZMAT personnel, the Texas Department of Public Safety, the Fort Bend County Sheriff's Office and agents from the Constable's Office of Precinct 1 responded to the scene.

Fulshear Simonton Fire Department Battalion Chief Ford Stein told ABC 13 that upon arrival they found the pilot conscious, although trapped inside the cockpit.

Before beginning the rescue, emergency teams secured the area due to a fuel leak.

"We needed to shut off the power to the home because of the spilled fuel and fumes. We didn't want to cause a spark that would create a bigger problem," Stein explained.

Once the risks were controlled, rescuers managed to extract the pilot, who was taken to Memorial Hermann Katy Hospital with injuries considered minor.

“Whenever you hear about a plane crash, it's not common to hear that someone managed to walk away,” Stein said.

Authorities investigate the causes of the accident

So far, authorities have not revealed the identity of the pilot or the circumstances that caused the aircraft to hit the house instead of landing on the planned runway.

The investigation remains open to determine what caused the accident. No injuries were reported inside the home.
