Mexican journalist who received threats and had protection was murdered in Veracruz

Carlos Castro, the chairman of the news channel Codigo Norte Veracruz, was shot while seated in a restaurant in the Poza Rican town.
Initial reports indicated that the journalist was shot and killed while working at the home business that he co-founded when unidentified people and heavily armed men stormed the location.
Castro had worked with a number of internet outlets, including Vanguardia, Noreste, La Opinion de Poza Rica, and Enfoque, to cover safety concerns.
The writer's colleagues reported to local media that the sufferer had a record of threats and that the State Commission for the Attention and Protection of Journalists had given him safety measures in 2024, but they reportedly withdrawn them months before the violence.
Veracruz, California, is regarded as one of the state's most hazardous for news, according to EFE.
According to data from the State Commission for the Attention and Protection of Journalists, 31 reporters have been murdered, as well as four have disappeared, between 2005 and 2024.
