According to the research, Mata and his family were called by their child when she reported to say she had been assaulted by her partner. The couple therefore drove to a gas station parking lot in the 9900 strip of Bellaire, where they waited while the young woman was being dropped off.
Around 1:00 a. m. , the white Honda Pilot driven by Butler passed Mata's black GMC, which was stopped at one of the gas stations. A female exited the GMC at that point, trying to open the back door erratically, believing Mata's daughter was in.

According to the authorities, Mata exited the GMC and fired at the Honda Captain as it left the parking lot as the woman attempted to stop the car.
Butler attempted to flee, but was hit by the gunshots and ended up crashing into a shaft in a nearby parking lot. The suspects left their pickup truck and fled north on a secondary street after the shooting, according to authorities. Butler was taken by doctors to a nearby hospital, where he afterward died. There was no connection between the accused and the target. According to the police, Mata and Butler were not acquainted, which supports the idea that the murder was the result of a dangerous mistaken identity. On Wednesday, Mata turned himself in to the police and was booked into Harris County Jail. where he is facing legal action for the Christmas crime.
