Three women were arrested in Texas after a two-month-old baby was admitted to the hospital with serious injuries that, according to authorities, would be consistent with a possible case of child abuse and neglect.

The investigation is being handled by the Smith County Sheriff's Office.

The defendants were identified as Sidney Whitt, 21 years old; Jacqulun Morales, 29; and Shelby Munoz, 18, reported Daily Mail.

Investigation began after medical and child protection report

According to authorities, the case began on June 18, when medical personnel and child protective services were notified that a baby had arrived at a Tyler hospital with injuries of concern.

The minor was later transferred to Children's Medical Center in Dallas for specialized care.

Investigators indicated that the baby remains hospitalized and receives intensive treatment.

According to the official report, he has severe injuries that include neurological complications.

Authorities describe alleged risk conditions inside the home

During the investigation, detectives interviewed adults and minors associated with the residence and subsequently executed a search warrant.

According to the sheriff's office, inside the property they found conditions that they considered inappropriate for minors.

Authorities said they also gathered evidence that the children were confined to a room when the adults left the home.

According to the version presented by investigators, on the night of June 16, two of the women left the place, presumably to a nearby hotel where they met with a man, drank and took drugs, spending the night away from their children.

Although the children were left in Muñoz's care, she was not in the room where the children were locked up. According to the investigation, the two older children trampled, hit and abused the baby.

The boy was so seriously injured that he suffered brain hemorrhage, seizures and severe facial bruising.

According to the police report, Muñoz did not intervene because the children were not his.

When Whitt and Morales returned after spending the night at the hotel, they discovered the baby's terrible injuries.

Investigation maintains that there was a delay in seeking medical attention

Authorities allege that after discovering the baby's condition, medical attention was not immediately sought.

The three women were arrested and remain in custody.
