Thomas Markle Sr., the father of Meghan Markle, is facing a potential 20-year prison sentence following his arrest for alleged possession of child pornography. The high-profile case has sparked significant media attention, with legal experts cautioning that a lengthy sentence could have severe consequences for the 82-year-old man, who is dealing with serious health issues.

Markle was taken into custody at Maravida Senior Living in Lakeland, Florida, on Friday, only to be released and subsequently placed under house arrest at the facility. He faces federal charges that carry a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison, according to a statement from the Justice Department.

Legal analyst and lawyer Shari Karney noted in an exclusive report that federal convictions for possession of child pornography can result in significant penalties.

According to recent data, the average federal sentence for each conviction is approximately 83 months, equivalent to nearly seven years of imprisonment.

Karney noted that, in the context of Markle's situation, a twenty-year prison sentence could potentially translate to a life sentence, given that even a five- or ten-year term at the age of 82 could be equivalent to a life imprisonment.

A criminal complaint has been filed, suggesting that Markle appeared in two images alongside a minor and was identified by a witness as the adult in those photographs. This alleged evidence has raised concerns that warrant further investigation by researchers.

A potential defense strategy for Markle's case involves highlighting his severe health issues, including dementia, a recent amputation, and other serious medical conditions. This could be presented to the court as mitigating factors that significantly impact his sentence, potentially leading to a reduced term. It is also emphasized that his age, disability, and high-profile status as the father of a duchess do not provide immunity from prosecution, and that the law does not offer special treatment for members of the royal family.

Last month, allegations of child sexual abuse material surfaced when Thomas Markle Jr. reported to authorities in Cebu, Philippines, that he had discovered a substantial amount of such content belonging to his father. The investigation, which initially occurred in the Philippines, has since been coordinated with the FBI.

Federal Bureau of Investigation special agents documented evidence of child sexual abuse material linked to Markle since 2008. A search of her property yielded approximately 78 items, including slides, film negatives, and books, which were seized as evidence. Markle's father initially disputed the allegations, describing them as "repugnant lies." However, an investigation by the Daily Mail found that one of its reporters discovered similar materials in an abandoned shelter in Mexico.

The Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle, expressed her deep concern over a recent investigation, stating that it has left her feeling disturbed. Despite this, she has chosen not to comment further on the matter. Meanwhile, Meghan and her husband, Prince Harry, have relocated from California and are now residing in England, having returned to the UK in August. The couple is also preparing for their first joint international trip, which will take them to Brussels.
