Actor Tom Cruise again spoke openly about the philosophy with which he approaches his film career and his inclination to perform risky action scenes without the help of doubles.
In an interview with the American magazine GQ — her first in-depth conversation with a media in two decades — the Hollywood star confessed that she is not afraid of death when faced with extreme manoeuvres in filming sets.
In addressing his particular link with danger, Cruise used a visual metaphor very linked to his emblematic productions: “I think you could look at my life and say, ‘I like to be on the brink of a dirt.’” From that premise, the 64-year-old actor argued that facing uncertainty is an essential part of his professional and personal journey.
Asked whether the risk of suffering a fatal accident while riding aerial acrobatics or parachute jumps generates fear, the protagonist of the “Mission: Impossible” franchise replied sharply: “Then am I afraid of death? No, I am not afraid of him.”
However, he clarified that this does not mean that he is immune to the feeling of fear, but that he chooses not to let himself be paralyzed by it. “I don’t bother that feeling. I understand that life has certainties and uncertainties,” he explained.
For the performer, performing these manoeuvres is not a mere quest for visual spectacularity or excessive adrenaline. According to him in the interview, his main intention is to provoke a genuine impact on the spectator. “How do we use these tools to create an emotional effect in the audience?” he asked, reflecting on the narrative of his films.
Cruise, who will soon return to the big screen in “Digger,” the new feature film by Mexican director Alejandro González Iñárritu,ined during the conversation a marked reservation regarding his personal, family and religious life. Instead, he chose to define himself as “a world citizen” focused on understanding people and connecting with different cultures through cinema.
