The candidate from the moderate sector of the Democratic Party, David Crowley, has prevailed over the left wing of the party in the primaries for the candidacy for governor of Wisconsin, after a close battle in one of the key states in the United States elections.

According to the projections of the main American media early this Wednesday, Crowley will win the candidacy for governor of that midwestern state by a minimal advantage over his main rival, the democratic socialist Francesca Hong.

With 95% counted, Crowley captured 39.78% of the votes, while Hong gathered 39.37%, a difference of just 0.41 percentage points that was enough, however, for mainstream media experts to consider that the balance would tip in favor of the former.

Crowley represents the moderate wing

Crowley, who leads the Milwaukee County Executive, represents the most moderate sector of the party and presents himself as an option with executive experience and the ability to compete in a politically divided state and is fighting to be the state's first African-American governor.

His candidacy received the support of the outgoing governor, Democrat Tony Evers, after he announced that he will not seek a third term.

His rival, Hong, presented himself as a progressive alternative and defended proposals such as public education and universal child care, in addition to rejecting donations from corporate political action committees.

A victory with national reach

The dispute aroused national attention due to the importance of that state and the fight between moderates and the growing progressive movement - represented by figures such as Bernie Sanders or Alexandria Ocasio Cortez, within the Democratic Party, after recent advances by left-wing candidates in other primaries.

The winner will face Republican Tom Tiffany, an ally of President Donald Trump, in November in a state considered key for both parties.

The two wings of the Democratic Party are involved in an open battle in the national primaries, where some left-wing candidates have achieved historic victories, such as Abdul El-Sayed in Michigan and Peggy Flanagan in Minnesota, who won the Democratic primaries for the Senate.
