He voted for Trump and ended up beaten by his immigration policy; ICE detained his fiancee
The president's supporter assures that he expected deportations against criminals, not against families with legal proceedings
A Texas businessman who supported Donald Trump's candidacy in the 2024 elections said he regretted his vote after Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents detained his fiancée, a Venezuelan immigrant with an ongoing asylum process.
“It is destroying families,” says the businessman
John Gannon, owner of an outdoor advertising company in Texas, told CBS News that his fiancée, Yasmin Suárez Reyes, was detained by ICE agents in July, shortly after passing through security at Houston's George Bush Intercontinental Airport.
Gannon stated that he voted for Trump convinced that deportations would target people with criminal records.
"They're arresting law-abiding citizens. Man, it's destroying families and jobs," he declared.
He also described the moment of arrest as a surprise operation. "They surrounded her and forced her into a vehicle. This is like the Gestapo," he said.
For her part, lawyer Anne Kennedy explained that Suárez Reyes entered the country legally, has a pending asylum application, a work permit and a Texas driver's license, in addition to having no criminal record.
The case divides opinions on social networks
When asked what message he would send to the president, Gannon responded: “Go after the criminals, but leave the small family businesses and children alone.”
The case also provoked mixed reactions. Journalist Molly Knight criticized the businessman's change of position by writing: "You voted for Trump so he would do this to other people."
In the same sense, political analyst Rachel Bitecofer ironically stated that repentance only came when immigration policies affected her own family.
