Siri received the most profound update in 15 years and leaves behind that limited voice assistant to become a conversational chatbot that understands context, manages complex tasks and interacts naturally between applications.

Apple presented this transformation during WWDC 2026 and the new Siri AI arrives powered by Google's Gemini models, a strategic collaboration that confirms that Apple decided to bet on its rival's technology to get out of the stagnation.

The new version will arrive in beta later this year along with iOS 27, iPadOS 27 and macOS 27, and is accompanied by a standalone application dedicated entirely to the assistant. This is not a simple patch but a complete restructuring of the system originally introduced in 2011, which now abandons its classic structure to operate on a new large language model (LLM).

A Siri that speaks like a chatbot and understands what you see on the screen

Apple finally transformed Siri from a voice assistant into a conversational AI chatbot capable of understanding context and managing complex tasks. Unlike traditional Siri, this version can access current world knowledge to inform its responses, consult information from the user's device, and respond based on what appears on the screen.

The new features coming include these key capabilities:

This memory capacity radically transforms the experience because the assistant no longer responds as if it were the first time you interact with it.

Write with Siri and AI agents that do tasks for you

One of the most practical functions is “Write with Siri”, which will help you compose texts in Mail and Messages reflecting the user's communication style with each contact. This option will appear in the keyboard bar and open AI-assisted writing tools to automatically generate or edit text. Apple also improved the system's dictation to more accurately capture spelling, punctuation, and capitalization.

Apple also plans to integrate an AI agent into its app store to allow users to delegate tasks such as reservations, calendar management, document editing or controlling smart devices. These agents will allow you to automate tasks between applications while the operating system retains control over permissions and access. The strategy includes creating a dedicated section in the App Store called “AI App Store” where Extensions will allow app agents to work directly with Siri.

The new Siri will also incorporate the ability to maintain two-way conversations, making it easier to understand the context and remember previous interactions. If you make a mistake during a command and quickly correct yourself, Siri will recognize the correction and adjust its response. You can follow threaded conversations without losing context, something previous Siri couldn't do.

For web searches, the new Siri will offer rich answers with summaries, key points and images, in addition to being able to generate daily news summaries pulled from Apple News. The new version will also allow you to rewrite and generate longer texts than before, including new intelligent grammar check options similar to Grammarly.

The agreement with Google that changes Apple's AI strategy

The development of this new Siri has involved an internal restructuring and collaboration with external partners such as Google, which now provides part of the underlying models and cloud infrastructure to enhance the assistant's responses and continuous learning. Apple and Google entered into a multi-year collaboration under which Apple's future core models will be based on Gemini models and Google cloud technology.

The decision to choose Google was confirmed in a joint statement shared with CNBC, where Apple said it evaluated multiple options before making this decision. The collaboration relies on Google's Gemini models and its cloud technology to support future Apple Foundation Models, not just Siri.

Although Google provides AI technology, Apple insists that its functions will continue to run in Private Cloud Compute, its own cloud system with a focus on security and privacy. This means the new Siri will maintain Apple's privacy standards while harnessing the power of Gemini for smarter responses.

The new Siri was announced at WWDC 2026 and will arrive in September with iOS 27, although some users will be able to try it in public beta in July. For early access, developers can install the first beta of iOS 27 and join the waitlist from Settings > Siri.

Siri AI will not initially be available in the European Union due to the Digital Markets Act, so European users will only be able to use it on macOS 27, watchOS 27, and visionOS 27 at first. This geographic limitation is temporary and Apple hopes to resolve it soon.

The transformation of Siri represents the most significant change to Apple's virtual assistant since its launch, combining the power of Google's models with Apple's secure infrastructure to create an assistant that truly understands what you need.
