Republican Senator John Kennedy warns that launching a military offensive to annex Greenland would be
John Kennedy, senator for Louisiana, believes it would be a colossal mistake for the US government to launch a military offensive to annex Greenland.
The operation carried out last Saturday by the US armed forces in Venezuela to capture former President Nicolas Maduro fueled speculation that their next objective could be to launch another military offensive to take control of Greenland.
Since arriving at the White House, Trump has repeatedly mentioned the strategic importance of annexing the Danish-controlled island.
“We need Greenland from a national security standpoint, and Denmark won't be able to do it,” the Republican emphasized on Sunday during a meeting with members of the media.
Even Karoline Leavitt, White House Press Secretary, indicated hours later that Trump is considering using the US military to acquire Greenland.
“The president and his team are discussing a range of options to achieve this important foreign policy objective, and of course, utilizing the United States Armed Forces is always an option available to the commander in chief,” the Republican stated in a declaration issued to The Hill.
Regarding this, during an interview with CNN, John Kennedy recommended that President Donald Trump carefully consider the implications of invading Greenland.
“Let me give you my perspective. Even a ninth-grade student with some intelligence knows that invading Greenland would be an enormous stupidity. President Trump is not a militaristic idiot, nor is Marco Rubio,” he stated.
From the 74-year-old Republican's point of view, the ideal scenario is for the people who live in Greenland to vote in favor of the island becoming a US territory.
“There are 41, “1,000 voters in Greenland and 20,501 people could decide that it should become part of the United States,” he argued. For his part, fellow conservative Roger Wicker, chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, recommended discarding the option of annexing Greenland so as not to damage the relationship with the member countries of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). “This is an issue that should be dropped,” he stated emphatically.
