Antimonument on missing persons disappears at the Angel of Independence in Mexico City
Mexico City authorities investigate the removal of an anti-monument placed by relatives of missing people at the Angel of Independence
The head of Government of Mexico City, Clara Brugada, ordered an investigation into the removal of an anti-monument installed by relatives of missing persons and search groups in the vicinity of the Angel of Independence, after the structure was removed without it being known until now who carried out the action.
During a press conference, the capital's president confirmed that she asked the security authorities to review what happened and determine the circumstances under which the piece placed by the groups disappeared.
"They stole the anti-monument. Let's see what happened, please, I'll entrust it to the Secretary of Security," declared Brugada.
Antimonument remembered the crisis of disappearances in Mexico
The structure had been placed only on Sunday by relatives of victims and search organizations in the Ángel de la Independencia roundabout, on Paseo de la Reforma, one of the most representative avenues of the capital.
The message inscribed on the antimonument stated:
"Mexico, world champion in disappearance. 135,000 in 2026."
The installation was part of the activities carried out to demand justice for the disappearance of Ana Amelí, a 19-year-old girl whose whereabouts have been unknown since she entered the Cumbres del Ajusco National Park in Mexico City.
Relatives and groups posted the message to make visible the situation of thousands of missing people in the country and demand search and care actions for the victims.
Amnesty International asks to clarify the withdrawal
After learning of the disappearance of the anti-monument, Amnesty International asked the capital authorities to investigate the events and provide public information about what happened.
The international organization called for a “prompt, exhaustive and transparent” review to be carried out to find out who removed the structure and under what circumstances.
In addition, he called to guarantee direct dialogue with the families and groups involved in placing the message.
Sheinbaum denies that the Government has removed the structure
President Claudia Sheinbaum rejected that her administration is related to the removal of the anti-monument and recalled that during her tenure as head of government of the capital, between 2018 and 2023, a position of respect was maintained towards the demonstrations of relatives of missing people.
“We respect the demonstration of the families of the missing,” he stated.
Sheinbaum assured that the groups maintain communication with the federal authorities and highlighted the work of the Missing Persons Search Commission.
“We work every day for the security and peace of the country,” he said.
Mexico faces more than 130 thousand missing people
The removal of the anti-monument occurs in the midst of the crisis of disappearances that Mexico faces. According to official figures, the country registers more than 130 thousand missing and unlocated people.
International organizations, such as the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR), have indicated that the situation represents a serious humanitarian crisis and have warned that a significant portion of the cases are related to organized crime activities.
While the investigations continue, relatives and search groups demand to know who removed the structure and why it was removed from the space where it was placed as a symbol of protest and memory.
