"Russia should reach an agreement. Russia has lost a huge number of people, and Ukraine too," US President Donald Trump said this Tuesday during a bilateral meeting with the Emir of Qatar, also confirming a meeting with his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodymyr Zelensky, within the framework of the G7 summit being held in Evian, France.

Trump said he had “a meeting” with his Ukrainian counterpart and that other discussions were planned for Tuesday. The American president arrived in Evian full of joy on Monday, after reaching a framework agreement with Iran, and with the intention of “doing something” now about the conflict in Ukraine, which has already lasted more than four years.

"Yesterday we had a very good conversation with President Zelensky and President Putin, and I see that maybe we can do something there. I really believe it, to be honest. Both are open to it," he said on Monday, when meeting with his French counterpart, Emmanuel Macron.

G7 and Trump contemplate new sanctions on Russian oil

Shortly after, the G7 leaders, including Trump, on Tuesday gave clear support to Ukraine, its sovereignty and territorial integrity, and agreed that more pressure must be put on Russia to bring it into negotiations, even with oil sanctions.

French diplomatic sources explained, at the end of the G7 summit session dedicated to the war in Ukraine, in which its president, Volodymyr Zelensky, participated as a guest, that this greater pressure could be exerted especially with new sanctions on Russian oil exports, once the unblocking of the Strait of Hormuz is expected, the closure of which led to the suspension of sanctions on Russia.

The sources indicated that Trump congratulated Zelensky on the current dynamics of the conflict, in which the Ukrainians no longer appear as those who are losing, and that like the other G7 leaders, he agreed that this new dynamic benefits him.

Following new attacks by Russia on Monday, which left at least 11 dead and set fire to a historic cathedral in kyiv, Zelensky called for “more pressure” on Russia and “more support for Ukraine's air defense.”

After searching in vain for a meeting with Putin during the G7, Zelensky again proposed a meeting in the United States, “a format in which Putin would find it more difficult to refuse,” the Ukrainian said in a video published this Monday on the social network X.

Russia denies invitation to G7

Moscow, for its part, assured this Tuesday that it has not received an official invitation from the Ukrainian side for a possible meeting between Zelensky and Putin, within the framework of the G7 summit in France. “Of course not,” declared Kremlin spokesman Dmitri Peskov in his daily telephone press conference, in response to whether they had received that official invitation from kyiv.

Peskov immediately clarified that between Moscow and kyiv “there are no official channels.” According to the Kremlin, if Zelensky "is willing to speak responsibly and seriously, and the kyiv regime knows perfectly well what we mean, he can always come to Moscow."
