Gustavo Petro proposes rebuilding Gran Colombia
Gustavo Petro proposes rebuilding Gran Colombia through a constituent vote. What is it about?
The president of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, again promoted this Saturday the idea of ??rebuilding Gran Colombia as a confederation of autonomous nations, through a constituent vote. He highlighted that it is a project inspired by the vision of Simon Bolivar.
Petro published his proposal on his X account, where he shared a map of South America and detailed his plan for regional union.
“This is Gran Colombia, it was the idea of “I propose, through a constituent vote of the people, that we rebuild it as a confederation of autonomous nations,” Petro wrote on the social network.
Strategic with autonomy for each country
According to the Colombian president, the countries that make up this confederation could establish common policies in trade, industrialization, clean energy, infrastructure, and connectivity, while maintaining autonomy in other areas.
Petro added that the confederation could have a Gran Colombian parliament, a court of justice, and a governing council, similar to the models of the European Union or the United States.
“A center for clean energy, knowledge, high-tech infrastructure, mobility, and communication… a potential hub for tourism and global connectivity,” the president emphasized.
The first time he launched the proposal
The head of state had already raised this idea last November during the IV summit between the European Union (EU) and the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) in Santa Marta, where he insisted that the initiative must come from civil society and not depend solely on governments. Petro proposed the creation of constituent committees in the countries that formed Gran Colombia—currently Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, and Panama—to discuss the possible confederation. The president maintains that this regional union would allow them to face common challenges, strengthen trade and industrialization, and revitalize Bolivar's historical legacy on the continent.
