Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) arrested a Jamaican immigrant who has been working as a flight attendant for Southwest Airlines for five years.
The Transportation Workers Union of the United States (TWU) announced that, while returning from a work trip, Lorenzo “Enzo” Thompson was deprived of his liberty on July 14 at the Nashville International Airport, Tennessee.
According to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the detained person entered the country through Miami, Florida.
Presumably, on April 17, 2021, he presented a document that allowed him to stay in the United States for six months.
However, when the deadline expired he did not leave the country and that turned him into a foreigner lacking legal status with the option of being deported once the authorities conclude their process.
Meanwhile, he remains in custody in a detention center located in the state of Mississippi, where he was transferred from Tennessee pending determination of his legal status.
In an interview with the American network NBC 5, Edward Marq, a flight attendant and union colleague of the detained Jamaican, assured that the union movement has long defended that “solidarity must exist regardless of race, religion or immigration status.”
For her part, Kristin Foster, a friend of the Caribbean man at risk of being sent back to his country, started a fundraising campaign on the GoFundMe platform in hopes of obtaining the money necessary to cover the costs of his legal defense.
“Lorenzo has always been the first to help others, without asking for anything in return,” he wrote.
Presumably, Thompson has no criminal record and, of the little that is known about him, is that he left the nation where he was born and lived most of his life due to insecurity problems that put his integrity at risk.
Despite completing every legal step in his process to obtain hypothetical citizenship, US authorities consider his immigration status to be irregular, which justifies his detention.
