ICE arrests Mexican with tourist visa during a traffic stop
A Mexican with a tourist visa was arrested by ICE in Arizona after a traffic stop, while family members question the real reason for the detention
Conflicting accounts have been made about the Mexican national's Arizona incarceration while on a holiday visa. Edwar Omar Mezquita Gonzalez, 27, of Puerto Penasco, Sonora, was detained by ICE officials while visiting his home in the Valley. Gonzalez entered the country legally with a true holiday immigration, as he does every year during the holidays, according to relatives to the Phoenix New Times. He is married to his brother, who is also his nephew. He has nephews and nieces, according to Samantha Cooley, a relative of Gonzalez and a champion for immigrant rights. Why was the man in Mexico on a tourist card detained? After going out for coffee, Gonzalez and his brother were driving through San Tan Valley in Pinal County on Tuesday, December 9 according to family witness. The older brother's light GMC Sierra pickup truck, which is used for both professional and personal purposes, such as picking up his kids, was with them on the way.
A Pinal County Sheriff's deputy followed them and stopped them near Gantzel and Bella Vista routes for alleged traffic violations, including partly obscure license plates and tinted windows.
Gonzalez's nephew, a legal permanent resident, presented his Green Card during the halt. For his piece, Edward obtained a holiday card. A HSI realtor then approached and examined the family's immigration records, according to the community.
They claimed that because he was working while in a job truck, they had to stop him, adding that neither of them were at the time.
This type contrasts with other reports that suggest the imprisonment may have taken place after Gonzalez had a record of an immigration procedure, adding to the uncertainty over the precise cause of the detention.
Transfer without documentation and move to ICE
Gonzalez was taken to the ICE headquarters in Phoenix after his incarceration, where he spent about three days in jail and waited for possible deportation. On December 11th, he suddenly was free, albeit without any of his personal information.
The young gentleman left without his I-94 type, driver's license from Mexico, or immigration, Samantha Cooley claims.
The Hispanic Consulate in Phoenix eventually returned these documents to her.
Jorge Mendoza Yescas, the Mexican Consul General in Phoenix, confirmed to Univision Arizona that Gonzalez ' release from ICE prison was the consulate's source of support.
