An accidental “like” on an old post can become that little digital scare that no one wants to experience. Adam Mosseri, CEO of Instagram, explained what really happens when you flag a photo or Reel by mistake, remove it almost instantly, and hope no one notices.
The accidental like that can give you away
Everyone knows the scene. You enter someone's profile with the intention of browsing a little, go down further than necessary and end up in a publication that seems like it came from another life. A photo from five years ago, an old Reel, an image lost among dozens of publications and you accidentally like it by mistake.
Instagram sends a notification to the other person every time someone likes a post. It doesn't matter if it's a newly uploaded image or content that has been collecting digital dust for years. As soon as the “like” is registered, the platform starts the notification.
The natural impulse is to remove the like at full speed. Many people think that doing it in a matter of seconds completely erases the incident. However, Mosseri made it clear that the result is not always as clean as we would like. Instagram can eliminate part of the trace, although it cannot guarantee that the other person will never find out.
The reason has to do with the way in-app notifications and alerts that come directly to the phone work. They are two different systems and are not under the same control once the notification has appeared on the device screen.
So yes, that fleeting like can sound an alarm. The account owner may not see anything, especially if they were not looking at their phone or have notifications turned off. But you may also come across the notice on your lock screen and wonder why someone interacted with a post lost in the Instagram archive.

According to the Instagram CEO's explanation, the platform generates two types of notifications when someone receives a “like.” The first is Instagram's internal notification, the one that appears in the activity section of the app. The second is the phone notification, visible on the locked screen or in the mobile notification center.
When you unlike, Instagram can delete the notice within the app. If the person checks their Instagram notifications after you've unhearted, they won't find an active record of that interaction. He will also not see your like on the publication, because for all intents and purposes within the app it no longer exists.
The problem appears with the alert sent to the phone. That notification may display a message similar to “Adam liked your photo,” according to the example used by Mosseri. Even if the user removes the like immediately, the alert may have already been delivered to the smartphone's operating system.
If the owner of the post taps on that notification after the like has disappeared, they can come to Instagram and find absolutely nothing. There will be no heart, there will be no activity and there will be no visible proof within the platform. That leaves a strange and quite recognizable situation for anyone who has lived through this moment.
The person may have seen the notice on their phone and, upon opening Instagram, discovered that there is no trace of it. Mosseri admits this can be confusing, but confirms that the mobile alert cannot be deleted from Instagram once it has been sent.
