More than 120,000 Canadians sign to declare US ambassador to their country persona non grata
A sector of Canadians refuses to allow Pete Hoekstra to continue being the United States ambassador to Canada, and thousands of signatures are being collected to oust him
In response to a call launched by Canada's parliamentary petition portal, 123,000 Canadians signed demanding to declare Pete Hoekstra, the US ambassador to their country, persona non grata.
The objective is for the 72-year-old diplomat born in the Netherlands and appointed by President Donald Trump as ambassador to be removed with the support of the citizens and residents of Canada.
Canadian law states that if the petition gathers five signatures and is supported by a member of parliament willing to submit it, the government must provide a formal written response within 45 days.
With the support of lawyer Elizabeth May, a member of the Canadian Parliament, Leanne Walker, a Calgary woman, started the petition on July 21.
In addition to demanding Hoekstra's removal as ambassador, he is requesting that a parliamentary committee investigate allegations of American diplomatic interference in Canadian affairs.
Walker accuses the former Michigan Republican Party chairman-turned-ambassador of normalizing Donald Trump's threats to annex Canada as the “51st state.”
“I don't think that's normal behavior for a diplomat, and I was tired of it becoming background noise,” she told CityNews Toronto television news.
Although the US ambassador's detractor is aware that he may not be replaced, she hopes that the result of her request will send a message to Washington of the animosity caused by her expansionist policy. The deadline to collect signatures ends on November 18.
It should be noted that since Donald Trump returned to the White House to fulfill his second term, he made it known that his objective was to expand US territory by annexing Canada, Greenland and Venezuela.
Although in theory the latter country continues to retain its independence, since Nicolás Maduro was removed as president, Washington has exercised control over its oil sector, forcing it to hand over the billions generated by the sale of crude oil.
Regarding Greenland, the majority of its population refuses to be annexed as part of the United States, a position also taken by Canadians.
