More than 65,000 people have been evacuated and 700 homes have been devastated by the fires that have raged in recent days in the northwest of the United States, especially the state of Washington, while authorities registered 70 large fires throughout the country this Monday.

Most of them burn in the states of Oregon (20) and Washington (16), the latter the most affected by conflagrations that offer no respite and that have burned more than 600,000 hectares.

Washington Public Lands Commissioner Dave Upthegrove reported the evacuation of more than 65,000 people in Spokane County due to the fires, which have destroyed 700 residences, in statements to CNN.

The territory has been in a state emergency since its governor, Bob Ferguson, declared a state of alert last Saturday.

To stop the most frequent origin of fires, Ferguson banned practically all agricultural and waste burning in the state until September 30.

So far there have been no deaths or injuries, although the authorities assure that they have not reached some areas devastated by three large fires, all of them out of control.

This Monday is ideal to move towards its extinction, since the strong wind is expected to subside and temperatures to drop below 30 degrees Celsius, before picking up again starting on Wednesday.

In neighboring Oregon, forestry authorities recorded 48 active outbreaks this Monday, including 20 large fires.

As a result of the flames, some 25,000 people are at risk of evacuation and more than twenty homes have been destroyed, according to the latest information provided by the state Department of Emergency Management.

While in Montana, also in the northwest, there are six large fires burning, all of them far from being controlled.

The Pacific Northwest is facing its worst fire season in more than thirty years, due to a combination of conditions such as record drought, low humidity and intense wind gusts.

The National Interagency Fire Center (NIFC), which monitors fires nationwide, reports 70 large fires across the country that have burned more than 770,000 hectares.

Almost 28,000 firefighters are deployed to fight the flames, in addition to 576 crews, 1,715 fire trucks and 212 helicopters, according to the latest bulletin, which reports the appearance of 257 new outbreaks on Sunday.

The United States has recorded 45,835 fires so far this year, the highest number recorded through August in the last decade, which have scorched more than 2.1 million hectares (5.2 million acres).

Only the years 2017 and 2022 exceeded this amount of razed land at this point in the year. EFE
