Councilwoman Nithya Raman may step down from leading the Los Angeles City Council's Housing and Homelessness Committee as she focuses on her mayoral campaign in the Nov. 3 general election.
If it is confirmed that the City Council decides that Raman leaves the committee chair, it could trigger a new political confrontation over the city's response to homelessness, when Raman faces Mayor Karen Bass in the election for the position.
Council President Marqueece Harris-Dawson, a Bass ally, plans to split the committee into two groups: one dedicated to housing and the other to the homeless. Apparently, Nithya Raman would not headline either of the two.
