The Peruvian Foreign Ministry summoned the Russian ambassador in Lima, Alekséi Ushakov, to express the national government's "concern" about the situation and lack of information about Peruvians who have died or disappeared while fighting for Russia in the war with Ukraine, it was officially reported.

The ambassador was called a day after the Peruvian government reported that 11 Peruvians have died, 114 are missing and three have been captured by the Ukrainian Army, out of a total of 459 compatriots fighting for Russia.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs indicated that the Foreign Minister, Carlos Espá, conveyed to Ushakov “the concern” of the president, Keiko Fujimori, “so that all the necessary information is provided regarding the location and situation of the Peruvians who are in Russia.”

Espá maintained that this must be done “because it is fair and a human right to information that the international community recognizes.”

In turn, the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Eric Anderson, stressed that Peru “is not going to forget or neglect” its citizens, “wherever they are,” and urged the Russian authorities “to provide accurate and updated information about the location and situation in which they are.”

Representatives of the families of Peruvians affected by this situation also attended the meeting, who conveyed to the ambassador their concern about the lack of information from their government, as highlighted in the official note.

Foreign Affairs assured that so far it has held more than 25 meetings with the affected families, has sent a special delegate to Moscow to inquire about Peruvians in Russia and has contributed to the repatriation of 27 compatriots.
