The United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) confirmed this Wednesday the detection of more than 4,100 cases linked to the current outbreak in the country of cyclosporiasis, a parasitic infection that causes diarrhea and whose origin is linked to the consumption of lettuce.

This volume represents the confirmation of more than 2,500 new infections in the last week alone.

Since May 1, 11,500 possible cases of this intestinal disease have been reported, including 4,173 laboratory confirmed in 41 states, which are currently related to the consumption of contaminated lettuce from Mexico.

The US Secretary of Health, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., assured this Tuesday that the current outbreak is “under control” and that its origin has been identified, which is why the product was withdrawn.

Kennedy spoke after the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) retracted the positive detection of cyclospora - a parasite that causes the disease and appears in crops that come into contact with fecal matter - in a sample of iceberg lettuce produced by the subsidiary of the American Taylor Farms in Mexico, which ordered a large-scale recall of affected products last week.

In any case, the FDA has stressed that the recall of all Taylor Farms products that include iceberg lettuce grown in Mexico is maintained, in total, 35 products distributed in 27 US states between June 29 and July 16.

The company recommends that consumers who have purchased products included on the list discard them immediately and do not consume them.

These almost 7,000 confirmed or suspected cases of the parasite would be 27 times more than the same period last year, according to the CDC. EFE
