A 27-year-old woman was charged in Wisconsin for allegedly causing the death of her one-year-old daughter after the child drowned in a bathtub inside her home in Janesville.

The defendant was identified as Rebecca Ambrose, who faces charges of child neglect and child neglect resulting in death. The girl's father, Jason Christianson, 26, was also charged with two counts of child neglect.

According to information released by the Rock County Sheriff's Office, authorities responded on June 13 to an emergency call about an unconscious baby at a residence in Janesville.

When the medical teams arrived at the scene, they performed resuscitation maneuvers before transferring the minor to a hospital. However, the girl was pronounced dead shortly after.

Prosecutor's Office: the mother left the baby alone while the bathtub continued to fill

During the initial hearing this week, prosecutors laid out details of the investigation that suggest Ambrose placed the baby in the bathtub and turned on the water to fill it.

According to the accusation, the woman left the bathroom and subsequently left the home for approximately 30 minutes.

The Prosecutor's Office indicated that, during that time, Ambrose would have used applications such as Snapchat and TikTok on his mobile phone.

When she returned home, she found the bathtub overflowing and the girl floating in the water with no signs of breathing.

Investigators further noted that Christianson remained asleep during the incident.

Authorities also investigated the conditions of the home

During the police intervention, agents described the conditions of the home as alarming.

According to documents cited during the judicial process, inside the property there was an accumulation of used diapers, remains of decomposing food, the presence of insects and visible dirt in different areas.

Authorities also indicated that Ambrose offered different versions of what happened during interviews after the fact.

In addition to the charge related to the child's death, Ambrose remains detained in the Rock County Jail under bail set at $10,000.

Christianson was released after posting $1,000 cash bail.

Both must appear in court again on July 17, while the judicial process continues.
