Authorities in Mexico detain nephew of the ex-leader of the Gulf Cartel Osiel Cardenas Guillen

Mario Alberto Cardenas Medina, “El Betito”, nephew of the ex-leader of the Gulf Cartel, Osiel Cardenas Guillen, was captured in Nuevo Leon, authorities in Mexico reported.
“The “Betito” is accused of leading cocaine trafficking operations to the United States. He was previously arrested in 2009 in Tamaulipas and in 2019 in the State of Mexico. According to authorities, Cardenas Medina, 43, was captured along with two other individuals, Raul “N” and Kevin Alberto “N”, in a suspicious vehicle parked in a shopping plaza south of Monterrey. Upon noticing the officers, they attempted to flee, but were apprehended a short distance away. Police also seized a rifle, a handgun, ammunition, and 44 bags of illicit substances. The operation involved personnel from the Federal Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection, the National Guard, the Ministry of Defense, the Attorney General's Office (FGR), and the State Investigation Agency (AEI). The men were turned over to investigate authorities. This is not the first time "El Betito" has been arrested by Mexican authorities; In 2019, the Attorney General's Office captured him in an operation carried out in the central State of Mexico. Although a judge ordered his release in 2022.
Osiel Cardenas Guillen, his uncle, who served as leader of the Gulf Cartel (CDG), was arrested in March 2003 on charges including organized crime and drug trafficking in various forms.
He was imprisoned in a maximum-security prison in Mexico, now known as Altiplano, until March 2005 when the Mexican government granted his extradition to the United States.
He was handed over to the US government in 2007 and faced charges for 19 crimes in a court in Houston, Texas.
In December 2024, he was deported to Mexico and is currently detained facing charges for the various crimes committed in that country.
Under his command, the CDG reached a high level of violence through the creation of Los Zetas, an armed enforcement wing made up of former elite military personnel.
