Chuck Edwards abandons his reelection after ethics report for alleged sexual harassment
The Ethics Committee concluded that his behavior with two young collaborators generated accusations within his office
Republican Rep. Chuck Edwards announced Wednesday that he is abandoning his reelection bid for the midterm elections following the Congressional Ethics Committee's findings about his “persistently unprofessional and inappropriate conduct” toward two young female employees.
"After much prayer and reflection, I have decided to withdraw from my re-election campaign. I will serve out my current term. Serving Western North Carolina has been the honor of my life," the congressman wrote on his X account.
Ethics Committee Report
Complaints from several female members of his team about inappropriate behavior led the House Ethics Committee to open an investigation that concluded this Monday that “excessive attention to young women had given rise to rumors and innuendos in the office.”
The report claims that Edwards gave his employees jewelry worth more than $1,000, designer handbags, guns, shoes, flowers, a laptop computer and cell phones.
“Such behavior,” the committee states, “would lead a reasonable observer to interpret it as sexual or romantic approach.”
Another case shakes Congress
Edwards' case is not the only one related to sexual harassment or abuse that the United States Congress is facing.
Ohio Republican Representative Max Miller is facing pressure from his party these days to abandon his re-election bid over his ex-wife's accusations of domestic violence.
Miller faces charges for allegedly holding his ex-wife, Emily Moreno, with a gun to the head, burning her chest and stomach with hot water, fracturing her collarbone and causing bruises on her shoulder.
Republican Senator Bernie Moreno, father of Miller's ex-wife, told the media that his "daughter lives in constant fear of this man."
"You can't imagine how that makes me feel, when a father's primary responsibility is to protect his children... if there is any minimum standard to be an elected official, he doesn't meet that basic requirement. I don't care about politics at all," he declared.
