Elections: Hilda Solís and María Elena Durazo obtain victories; Measure ER fails
Solis advances to the general election in search of US Congress and Durazo secures a seat on the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors
Hilda Sols and Mara Elena Durazo, two Latina ladies, are still making history in California politics.
Hilda Sols, a Democrat officer for Los Angeles County, has advanced to the general election on November 2 to face Pedro Antonio Casas, a Republican who represents the 38th Congressional District of the United States.
After the passage of Proposition 50, incumbent Rep. Linda Sanchez ( D) made the decision to work for a seat in California's District 41, which includes parts of southern Los Angeles County and extends into Orange County.
Prior to joining the administration of former President Barack Obama as Secretary of Labor, Sols, the daughter of a Dominican mother and Mexican father, represented California's 31st and 32nd districts in Congress.
In a runoff for the chair that will be in the 38th District of California, Sols expressed his excitement and readiness to win in November.
" Thank you to the citizens of Los Angeles and Orange counties," as well as to the participants, supporters, union supporters, elected officials, staff members, friends, and relatives who supported this plan. We have assembled a broad coalition that is determined to help people, he continued.
Pedro Antonio Casas, a democrat, may be evaluated.
What is at play in this election, according to Hilda Sols, is unquestionably more crucial.
This area deserves a consultant who will fight for Trump's plan, advance environmental justice, protect immigrant families, defend workers ' rights, and support women's rights. A leader who will struggle for allies ' access to affordable healthcare, financial stability, and dignity is essential, he said.
With 51. 83 % of the vote count, District 38's voters wanted a leader who would protect employees, defend immigrant communities, and expand opportunities for all.
Pedro Antonio Casas obtained 31. 69 % of the vote ( 19, 185 ). It makes no difference if a candidate receives more than 50 % of the ballot in the competition for a legislative seat. The second two spots progress to the following round.
To the state Board of Supervisors, a big thanks.
In the primary elections on Tuesday, State Senator Mara Elena Durazo, the daughter of Mexican immigrants who spent the summer of her children picking fruits, strawberries, and grapes in the Californian countryside, was elected. Hilda Sols did step down.
" I'm delighted to everyone who walked in, called, and voted," Durazo said. Working individuals and small companies who believe the state can do things better fueled this plan.
She continued," In the state Senate, I fought for fair compensation and health care, and I will maintain that devotion with intensity, kindness, and a promise to make this state serve the people. "
Refusal of additional fees: Measure ER fails.
The voters in Los Angeles County rejected the so-called Essential Services Restoration Act ( Measure ER ) because the count indicated a 47. 26 % ( 566 ) in favor and a 597 ( 748 ) in favor.
By implementing a 0. 5 % ( half percent ) general sales tax over a 5-year period, which would generate approximately$ 1 billion annually, subject to independent audits, Supervisors Hilda Solis and Holly Mitchell's initiative sought to reduce the risk of the County's four public hospitals and numerous clinics, as well as mass layoffs of healthcare providers and other service cuts.
Lidia Novelo, a 79-year-old voter, said," I didn't spend any more taxes because the cost of living is really high. " They are also removing a lot of medical supplies, which will ultimately hurt everyone.
Los Angeles County is currently facing a massive$ 662 million gap in Department of Health Services funding, mostly caused by changes to federal and state laws, such as freezes on Medi-Cal membership and reductions in national corresponding rates. These reductions pose a threat to region-wide, important social safety net services.
Supervisor Sols ' disappointment was that the Trump administration had made the" Big Beautiful Bill," which was a local response to the administration's plans to repeal Medicaid and repeal essential components of the social safety net that millions of Americans depend of. Sols did in fact warn of the endearing effects being devastating.
Running people, seniors, people with disabilities, low-income people, and some of our most vulnerable people will gain access to essential healthcare. As companies are reduced, delayed, or completely eliminated, lives will be lost, Solis warned.
