Mexico will file lawsuits in the US after the death of a Mexican in an ICE operation
The Sheinbaum government will carry out forceful legal actions after the death of 17 Mexicans during ICE operations and detention centers
The Foreign Minister of Mexico, Roberto Velasco, announced this Thursday that the country is going to file complaints with the US Department of Justice after the recent death of a Mexican in an immigration operation in Texas, as well as the fourteen cases of deaths in detention centers in the custody of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Service (ICE).
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is going to request support from the Attorney General's Office (FGR) to formally present complaints against whoever is responsible before the state prosecutor's offices and the United States Department of Justice for the deaths of Mexicans in custody and in ICE operations,” Velasco reported during the presidential press conference.
With this step, the head of Mexican diplomacy intends to "move from the diplomatic sphere" to the judicial sphere, and go directly to the US prosecutor's offices, requesting "that what is happening be investigated in the criminal sphere."
Likewise, he added that the federal government is going to take “civil actions” against the companies that operate in the detention centers of the neighboring country, entities to which they sent letters “cessation” of actions that violate human rights and “led to the death of fourteen Mexicans.”
“Also, on the other hand, together with civil organizations, we are going to present requests to the Inter-American Court of Human Rights (IACHR) for the protection of Mexican people in detention centers, including for the granting of precautionary measures,” Velasco highlighted.
Finally, the Secretary of Foreign Affairs said that he will “demand” the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, for the protection of Mexicans in ICE detention centers, while conversations with US officials on this issue remain a “priority.”
"We are going to continue communication with the Department of State, with the Department of Security and with different authorities of the United States. The president (Claudia Sheinbaum) has asked us to make this a priority," he indicated.
The chancellor recalled that all these measures were an “instruction” from the Mexican head of state, who “has instructed us to initiate forceful legal actions to respond to this very painful tragedy that we are seeing.”
“This will be the focus of our conversations with the United States Government,” he concluded.
The measures announced by the Mexican Administration come after days ago an ICE agent shot a Mexican migrant identified as Lorenzo Salgado Araujo during an operation, which caused his death hours later in a Houston hospital.
At least 17 Mexicans have died in ICE detention centers or in immigration raids since Donald Trump's return to the United States presidency, which has tightened the White House's immigration policy. EFE
