The Department of Government Efficiency will not operate again during the Trump administration

Since the weekend, the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) closed operations so as not to return to action during the rest of the administration headed by President Donald Trump, who determined this through the executive order signed when creating it last year.

For 18 months, the Department carried out an exhaustive review of federal agency spending, contracts, and the number of employees in its workforce.

Based on this, it was determined to reduce the budget to the extent possible to ensure that the services required by citizens continue to be offered.

To achieve this goal, the help of Elon Musk, the richest man on the planet, was resorted to; and Vivek Ramaswamy, Ohio millionaire and former Republican presidential candidate.

Between the two figures, they decided to fire thousands of federal employees, put an end to several financial support programs for foreigners, and terminate contracts with service providers who have been working for the government for years.

The controversial thing about the matter is that the first to step aside was Ramaswamy, as he agreed with Donald Trump to run to try to become governor of his home state.

Later, when Musk's temporary and symbolic contract expired on May 29, 2025, the president decided to stop renewing it.

Despite this, the DOGE continued to operate until Friday of last week with apparently favorable results.

Until October of last year, the adjustments required by said Department translated into nearly $214 billion dollars derived from the cancellation of contracts with several suppliers; to end leases and subsidies; of the supposed elimination of fraud and improper payments; and the reduction of personnel in most federal agencies, to name a few points mentioned in a statement issued.

“While DOGE's formal mission has come to an end, the mission to eliminate waste, fraud and abuse will continue.

Good stewardship of public funds and responsible government are not temporary initiatives. We hope that these principles will endure for the next 250 years of the United States,” the Department detailed.

Although DOGE has now ceased operations, several of its most outstanding former employees have been reassigned to other federal agencies in leadership positions.
