How many steps do you need a day to be healthy?

The myth of 10,000 steps a day is losing strength. The most recent studies point to a more realistic and achievable figure

The recommendation of 10,000 steps per day has been adopted by smart watches, health programs, and casual medical advice for decades. That figure, however, was never the result of any medical study; instead, it was the result of a 1960s Chinese advertising campaign aimed at selling pedometers. Data collected over the past ten years suggests that the secret number may be significantly lower than it is today.

More than 160 000 people from 57 reports were reviewed in a significant meta-analysis released in The Lancet Public Health in July 2025. Walking roughly 7, 000 steps per day is associated with a 47 % reduction in all-cause mortality, a 25 % reduction in cardiovascular disease, a 38 % reduction in dementia, a 22 % reduction in depression, and a 28 % reduction in falls.

Although 10,000 steps per day are still considered to be acceptable for the most energetic people, the study's authors claim that 7, 000 steps are associated with therapeutically beneficial improvements and could make a larger and more realistic goal for a large portion of the population.

It is not even necessary to reach that number in order to see gains, which is a fact about the same job. Even the smallest counts, roughly 4, 000 everyday steps, are now associated with better health as opposed to the extremely low activity levels, roughly 2, 000 steps. That is, the biggest benefit increase occurs when people transition from almost completely sleep to liberal walking, rather than by chasing higher and higher numbers.

The findings, which were not directly related to the study, were welcomed by professional Daniel Bailey, a specialist in passive conduct at Brunel University in London, who praised the findings because they refute the notion that achieving maximum health by taking 10,000 steps per day is required.

Not all rewards behave the identical

However, the relation between actions and wellness is not standard for all conditions. The researchers observed that, in the case of cardiovascular disease, the benefits continue to increase perhaps above 7,000 measures, while for most other measures – such as type 2 diabetes, cancer or mental health – the improvements tend to mountain above that level, although they continue more slowly the more you walk.

Another earlier studies more clarify the image. Studies from the T. H. School of Public Health Chan from Harvard, led by epidemiologist I-Min Lee, had already shown that even modest increases—going from 2,700 to 4,400 steps per day in people over 70 years of age—could reduce the risk of premature death by about 40 %, with rewards that stabilized around 7,500 ways. And a 2023 meta-analysis published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, using data from more than 110,000 people, put the starting point for rewards at as low as 2,500 measures regularly.

A more people goal

For professionals, the underlying message is not that the passion to move more must be abandoned, but that the barrier to entry to get true rewards is significantly lower than previously thought. Now, it is estimated that one in three adults in the world is considered “insufficiently active”, but setting reasonable goals can be key to getting more people into the habit of walking.

In practical terms, about 7,000 methods are equivalent to just over three miles of running, something that can be accomplished by combining daily trips—going to work, running errands, climbing stairs—with a 20- to 30-minute move. Specialists agree that there is no one find appropriate for everyone: age, earlier health status and level of physical fitness influence what the maximum threshold is for each person.

The assumption that emerges from the most recent evidence is easy: there is no need to fight five digits on the stage counter to be healthy. Every extra move, especially when starting from a sedentary lifestyle, works.
