Wisconsin judge resigns after conviction in immigration obstruction case
Hannah Dugan resigned after facing conviction in immigration obstruction case and intense Republican pressure
After being pressured by Republicans, who threatened to remove her if she did not, Judge Hannah Dugan, who was found guilty of obstruction for helping an immigrant evade national agencies, submitted her departure.
In a notice sent to Tony Simmons, the Democratic governor on Saturday, Dugan wrote," As you know, I am the subject of an unparalleled national legal process that is far from over, but which presents huge and difficult challenges that threaten" the freedom of our court. I continue to fight for both the democracy of our court and for myself. Instead of letting the fate of Milwaukee County's 31st branch depend on a political debate in the state legislature, the citizens of Wisconsin who I cherish receive to start the year with a judge, she said. Dugan was found guilty in the middle of December on obstruction-related charges because she assisted a Mexican refugee in avoiding arrest after being informed of an imminent imprisonment. Dugan's resignation letter was sent in response to the Trump administration's assault on immigration, which has drawn popular opposition from the left. Dugan, who served for nine years as a judge in the Milwaukee County circuit judge, attracted national attention when emigration authorities attempted to apprehend Eduardo Flores-Ruiz, an illegal citizen who was a witness in her court.
According to the indictment, the judge confronted the FBI and Immigration and Customs Enforcement ( ICE ) agents who were awaiting outside the courtroom to detain Flores-Ruiz and directed them to the presiding judge's office.
Dugan informed Flores-Ruiz's prosecutor that his client could enter his future hearing via Zoom while the agents were absent, and they led them through a private judge door. After a foot chase, the officials located Flores-Ruiz and arrested him. He was later deported and given a day served sentence for entering the United States without authorization.
