Myles Garrett made NFL history again with a performance that confirms his place among the most dominant defensive players of all time. Cleveland Browns defensive end Garrett broke the single-season sack record on Sunday, reaching 23 quarterback sacks, a mark never before achieved in the league. The defensive end surpassed the previous record of 22.5 sacks, shared by Michael Strahan, set in 2001 with the New York Giants, and TJ Watt, who tied it in 2021 with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Garrett set the new record after sacking Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow on a day that will be etched in NFL history. Since entering the league in 2017 as the first overall pick in the draft out of Texas A&M, Garrett has built a career marked by consistency and evolution. However, the 2025 season has become his crowning achievement. In addition to leading the NFL in sacks, he also leads the league in tackles behind the line of scrimmage with 32, ten more than last season, when he was already the leader in that category. A dominant season that puts him on track for another award. Garrett's impact isn't just explained by accumulated numbers, but also by the consistency of his performance. Throughout the entire season, he only went scoreless in four games: against the Pittsburgh Steelers, Minnesota Vikings, and Detroit Lions in consecutive weeks, and again against the Steelers in Week 17. The rest of the schedule was a constant display of pressure on opposing quarterbacks. His best individual performance came in Week 8, when he recorded five sacks against the New England Patriots. Although the Browns lost 32-13, the defensive end's performance was one of the most outstanding individual performances of the year. Adding to that performance are the four sacks he recorded in the home loss to the Baltimore Ravens in Week 6. Before the start of Week 17, Garrett had accumulated 22 sacks after adding two against the Bengals, falling just half a sack short of tying the all-time record. He didn't need to wait long to surpass it and take sole possession of the mark.

The record is also a reflection of the collective effort and the defensive system implemented by Jim Schwartz, Cleveland's defensive coordinator, under whose guidance Garrett has further enhanced his impact on the game. Until this season, only 12 players in NFL history had managed to surpass the 20-sack mark in a single season.

With this performance, Garrett is shaping up as the leading candidate to win the Defensive Player of the Year award, an accolade he already won in 2023. His trajectory is strongly pointing towards the Hall of Fame: in October he surpassed Reggie White for the most sacks before turning 30 and currently has 124.5 career sacks.
