Elon Musk once again shook the telecommunications board with a promise that sounds almost like science fiction. The founder of SpaceX assured that the bandwidth available to Starlink users will be multiplied by almost 100 thanks to the arrival of the company's new generation of satellites, known as Starlink V3. The figure is not a marketing whim, but the result of a very specific combination, more satellites in orbit and each one with much more individual capacity.

As Musk explained in his own statements, each V3 satellite will have more than 10 times the bandwidth of the previous version, and the company plans to launch more than 10 times the current number of units. How is this bandwidth jump achieved?

With the massive arrival of V3 satellites, the idea is that this gap will narrow significantly. Starlink has already been working on its “Performance” antenna, capable of exceeding 400 Mbps download in optimal conditions, and the company has confirmed that it aims to reach speeds of up to 1 Gbps even in the most remote areas of the planet, without the user needing to change their current hardware. This means that, in practice, the experience of browsing, making video calls, playing online games or watching streaming content via satellite will begin to look much more like what today only a fiber cable buried under your street could achieve.

It is worth clarifying that this will not happen overnight. Deploying 100,000 satellites is a process that will take years, and factors such as network congestion, the number of connected users in a single area, and weather conditions will continue to play a role in the actual speed each person experiences. Even so, the direction of change is clear, and shows that satellite internet has ceased to be an alternative of last resort and has become an increasingly serious competitor to traditional fiber optics.
