Most humanoid robots sold in the United States are manufactured abroad, especially in China.

The US decision to ban its import was made based on the conclusions of a working group created by the White House. This body determined that these foreign-made robots could threaten critical infrastructure and “the safety and security” of United States residents.

The working group cited, among other examples, the case of French programmer Sammy Azdoufal, who reported having accidentally accessed the data of thousands of robotic vacuum cleaners manufactured by the Chinese company DJI. Despite the ban, the Pentagon and Department of Homeland Security may grant waivers.

Only affects new models

A statement explains that “advanced robotic devices”, a term that encompasses “mobile robots” that imitate the way humans and animals walk, have been added to the list of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). This list already included certain types of drones, as well as Chinese companies Huawei and China Telecom.

The FCC also lists foreign-made power inverters, devices that, among other functions, convert direct current from batteries or solar panels into standard alternating current, which can be used by the power grid. The decision, announced on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, will only affect new models and not those that have already been sold or authorized in the United States.

“Stop Chinese companies”

China was quick to react and accused the United States on Wednesday of seeking to “slow down” its companies with these bans. “China has always firmly denounced the United States' tendency to abusively invoke national security to restrain Chinese companies,” reacted Mao Ning, spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry.

“Protectionism does not improve American competitiveness at all; it only harms the interests of American companies and consumers,” he remarked in his usual press conference.
