An American Airlines flight bound for Bermuda suspended takeoff Friday afternoon at Miami International Airport after another aircraft crossed an active runway without authorization, authorities and the airline said.

The incident involved American Airlines Flight 308, which was preparing to take off when the crew detected the presence of another aircraft on the runway, American Airlines stated in a statement to Fox News Digital.

The operation was interrupted and no injuries were reported.

Crew stopped takeoff after observing another aircraft

According to American Airlines, the plane had been cleared to take off when the pilots visually identified that another aircraft was crossing the runway.

The airline indicated that the crew decided to cancel the takeoff as a preventive measure.

The flight subsequently continued its itinerary and arrived in Bermuda approximately two hours late, according to tracking data cited in the report.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) confirmed that the other aircraft crossed the runway “without authorization” and opened an investigation to determine how the incident occurred.

Air control communications records released by US media show an exchange between controllers and the pilot of the other aircraft after the fact.

According to these records, the pilot indicated that he understood that he had received authorization to cross, while from the tower they indicated that the instruction was directed to another aircraft.

The report identified the second aircraft as flight EJA434, associated with NetJets operations through a third-party maintenance provider.

A NetJets spokesperson said the aircraft was not under the company's operational control at the time of the incident.

The incident occurs amidst attention on air safety

The episode comes as air traffic increases ahead of the July 4 holiday in the United States and after several recent incidents related to runway operations and airport maneuvers.

So far, the authorities have not reported sanctions or published preliminary conclusions about the case.

The investigation remains open.
